Today's public ballot to allocate 65 new boat pens at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour has attracted keen interest.

Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said 102 registrations had been received for the ballot conducted by the Western Australian Electoral Commission.

Those successful in the ballot will be offered a five year licence in advance, to help fund the construction of the pens, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

“The new pens are highly sought after because of their convenient location with easy access to Rottnest and the river,” Ms MacTiernan said.

“They will help ease the current shortage of berths for larger recreational vessels, registrations of which have increased by more than 50 per cent over the past decade from 3,270 in 1998 to 5,050 in 2007.

“The pens range in size from 15 to 22m and cater for vessels of 12m length or greater. Two 35m pens will be set aside for casual berthing for larger visiting vessels.”

The new boat pens are part of a redevelopment of the southern end of Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour.

The Government recently called for tenders to undertake the first stage of work including the construction of the new pens, which will involve the extension of a current jetty and maximise the use of undeveloped seabed.

Future stages of work, subject to funding, could see the replacement of the existing 40-year-old timber jetties which are at the end of their serviceable life and the incorporation of an alternative pen layout to provide a total additional 100 pens.
