Western Australian businesses, both small and large, have a chance to promote their success through the 2007 Western Australian Industry and Export Awards, Premier Alan Carpenter said today.

Mr Carpenter, who announced that nominations were now open, said the awards were the State’s most prestigious business awards.

“The awards provide an opportunity to promote the success of WA companies at home and overseas and open doors to new markets,” he said.

“Last year’s winners included a large cross-section of enterprising companies which were not afraid to try new ideas and seek new markets here and abroad.”

Award applicants are eligible for a range of benefits, including one year’s membership with the Australian Institute of Export (WA) and access to advice on exporting from the Department of Industry and Resources and Austrade.

The Premier said the awards recognised the contribution exports made to the State’s economic development.

“WA recorded a massive $33.2billion trade surplus for 2006, up from $28.4 in 2005, while the nation recorded a trade deficit of 12.2billion,” he said.

“The State now accounts for 33.5 per cent of Australia’s exports, up from 31.3 per cent during 2005.

“In annual average terms, the total nominal value of WA exports also strengthened, rising by 25.7 per cent over 2006 to a record $54.8billion.”

The WA Industry and Export Awards, now in their 19th year, feature 15 categories, as well as the Premier’s Award for Excellence.

All the State’s export category winners automatically compete as finalists in the Australian Export Awards in Brisbane in November.

The 2007 awards, administered by the Department of Industry and Resources (DoIR), are sponsored by Austal, ANZ, Austrade, Australia Post, Fremantle Ports, Jackson McDonald, Rio Tinto Iron Ore and The West Australian newspaper.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia, UnionsWA, the Australian Institute of Export (WA) Ltd and the Chamber of Minerals and Energy are endorsing the awards.
