West Coast Eagles Win Australian Football League Grand Final

West Coast Eagles win the 2006 Australian Football League Grand Final, defeating Sydney by 85 to 84 points at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in front of a capacity crowd of 100,000 spectators, many of them from Perth and Sydney.

The Sydney Swans defeated the Fremantle Dockers and West Coast Eagles at Subiaco Oval in preliminary finals by closely contested games of Australian Rules Football to reach the grand finals of the AFL.

There will be a victory parade through the streets of Perth on Tuesday. This afternoon fans welcome Eagle players at Subiaco Oval where hopefully all players will be rested enough to acknowledge junior footballers who might present them with awards.

West Coast Eagles player Andrew Embley won best player of the match award, the Norm Smith Medal.

Other winners are the transport, retail and hospitality industry businesses of Melbourne. An estimated 40 million dollars could have come into Perth's economy instead of leaving it if Perth had a big enough stadium to mount an argument for a Grand Final play off between the Dockers and Eagles in the future.
