The Western Australian Government today announced the latest round of Arts Development Grants and reiterated the important role of arts and culture in the community. Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said a total of $638,124 had been made available to arts practitioners and organisations, it was the broader community which would reap the benefits from experiencing their future work. “The State Government recognises the need to foster the State’s artistic assets, which is why these funding rounds, through the Department of Culture and the Arts, are crucial to the development of arts in Western Australia,” Mr Day said. “This funding will assist 36 artistic projects, representing exhibitions and performances including music, literature, dance, theatre, interdisciplinary and visual arts for the community to experience and enjoy.” The Arts Development Grants program provides funding for projects starting July 1, 2009.

The Arts Development Panel assesses applications for arts activity in all art form areas excluding film, television and radio. All applications to the program were peer-assessed by members of the arts sector - including practicing artists, arts managers and individuals with relevant knowledge and experience - appointed by the Minister for Culture and the Arts.
