With flights and cheap accommodation in Bali, Bali is the most popular international destination for Perthites. Only three hours flight for under $300 means it is cheaper, warmer and more exotic for a holiday in Bali than Dunsborough or Rottnest. More Perthites holiday in Bali than Sydney or Melbourne. Many Perthites retire to Bali for winter. I love Bali because it has ALL the other things Asia has but in one place. Most importantly surf. Yes Samui has great Thai food. Yes Sri Lanka has surf, cheap good food, culture, mountains, snorkeling, etc but distance is a barrier.
Last year I had the fortune to work a couple of hours each afternoon (after surfing), teaching the marketing executives of the 5 star Discovery Kartika Plaza Hotel on South Kuta Beach. The breakfast at this Bali beach resort was delicious and creative, with a good variety to choose from every morning. The night clubs in Bali pump out duff duff dance music all night. Each club is different. I liked the young raunchy dancers in the VIP Club near the mamorial to the Bali bomb victims. The “Bounty” and reggae music club were good. Really good if you’re single because hooking up with a tourist from Europe or an Indo is easy. I never knew this when I went to Bali in 1975 nor 1996 as a family man, but go single and you’ll discover a new perspective about Bali. Enjoy Bali, let your hair down but don’t forget your condom and check adam’s apples to find out if your new friend is female or a ladyboy. After my partner died last year, I fell in lust on the wonderful island of Nusa Lembongan. Nusa (island) Lembongan has surf, is a bit cheaper than Bali, has the WORLD’S best snorkeling and far less beachfront sale pressure than Bali. The second time we went to Lembongan on a huge Bali Hai power boat. Had a nice lunch and sailed back on a HUGE catamaran, into a nice sunset over Bali. Bali Hai Cruises have an office in Subiaco, Perth.
We also had the fortune to stay at the new Elephant Safari Park Lodge near Ubud where we got on taxi elephants by the door of our elevated villa. The elephants also took us on jungle tours. Food at the Elephant Safari Park Lodge restaurant is good. You can watch returning elephants bathing next to the restaurant. I meet the Australian owner Nigel who also owns the largest adventure company in Bali. Their white water rafting tour was so much fun that I recommend it as a MUST do activity in Bali. The scenery including waterfalls down steep mountain sides is awesome. After descending down Bali river rapids, a nice lunch is served by Bali Adventure Tours.
Surfing Bali without a wetsuit in the middle of Perth’s winter is a joy. For older surfers like me and beginners, surf a Kuta Beach or Legian Beach is wonderful and often consistent. Big perfect waves at Uluwatu is the go for experienced surfers.
I have flown to Bali with JetStar and AirAsia but after meeting the air Garuda managers last night at a function by the Australia Indonesia Business Council at the Indonesian consulate in Perth, I will try Garuda to Bali next flight to paradise near Perth.
