IMPORTANCE OF RELIABLE WEBHOSTING FOR SEARCH ENGINE LISTINGS

If a directory gave users a bum steer they would not have too many users after a while. That's how it is online too, so if search engines discover your site is offline what do you think they'll do? You guessed it; delist pages their spiders (bots) discovered not there and giving search engine users a bum steer "Error 404 Page Not Found". Depending on how long your site has been down depends on how long your listing takes to recover, if ever. RELIABLE web hosting is the MOST important consideration when it comes to selecting a web hosting service provider. The moment I discover any of my sites are down, I URGENTLY phone my web hosting service provider. That brings me to the second most important criteria: fast, responsive phone support. I recently had a web hosting service provider switch off my 70,000 visitors per month www.perthperth.com on a Saturday. This eastern states of Australia, large webhosting service provider, with some good web technology do NOT offer a telephone number and despite my emails tagged "URGENT" and "CRITICAL", did not get my site on-line till Tuesday. For days Yahoo winning pages for example "map of australia" etc disappeared, then came back with page titles such as "account suspended" and descriptions about hshpere web technology. Finally a couple of weeks later, Yahoo listed the correct page title and description and fortunately listed us on top of page one again. Google brought some of our pages back on page one. Even some new pages such as "Doctor Perth" showed on page one but many such as our winning page for "new cars perth" dissapeared. My www.scarboro.info/accommodation.htm used to show on page one of Google now only the home page does after searching for "accommodation scarborough beach" I moved hosting of the Scarboro website to Chicargo which means it won't perform in search engines as well as in Australia but since it is mainly a non-money making community website, I was not prepared to keep paying expensive webhosting cowboys in Brisbane for poor service. In Chicargo it costs $55pa for web hosting. A strategy for web hosting reliability is to have a back-up of your site on another server unrelated to the primary server’s hosting firm if you can afford to pay hosting a back-up site. “hostname” entry examples:
NS1.WEBHOSTINGSERVICEPROVIDERHUSTON.COM
NS2.WEBHOSTINGSERVICEPROVIDERHUSTON.COM
NS3.WEBHOSTINGSERVICEPROVIDERLONDON.COM

LOCATION of your web-server is important for niche marketing to geographical locations. I don’t mean that the server your website is on is in a thermonuclear bomb proof data centre with guard dogs and a standby electricity generator, although that would be nice. Location of your webserver makes a difference for searches on both Yahoo and www.google.com/en compared to www.google.com.au. For example when I had a site about accommodation in Singapore hosted in Australia, it was 1st on Yahoo searched in Australia but when I switched hosting of the same site to Canada it dropped out of Yahoo search results here but was first when searching ca.yahoo.com. Another geographical example: When searching www.google.com.au my www.4webmarketing.biz is 1st of 87million web pages for "web marketing" however when searching http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=web+marketing it is 7th, mainly because the keyword density of the home page title: “Web Marketing Australia” is diluted by the word “Australia” If I took the word "Australia" out of the page title, I’d likely be 1st but I don’t want to risk being 1st for my target phrase “web marketing australia”. Speed of fetching pages from the other side of the world is slower but when talking about 34 times slower of blistering speed, speed is not an issue for me unless a ships anchor busted a cable in the Indian Ocean and traffic is diverted through a slower route somewhere else. Then again I shouldn’t be thinking of me but rather where most of my clients are and what search engines / directories they’re using, etc.

With owning over 500 domain names, I use web hosting service providers in Perth, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Toronto, Chicago, London etc. The best webhosting service provider based upon my criteria in order of priority:

  • Reliability >99.5% up-time
  • Contact-ability 24/7/365
  • Support
  • Price
  • Control panel with access to stats, email filtering etc.
  • Friendlyness
  • etc
.. is one of a few I use in Perth: www.hostaway.com.au
Great for the Perthites to have not only the best web-hosting service provider in the world but also the best web marketer in the world according to Google in both in the one city.

Next article, I’ll write about domain names, domainiers and some examples like my unfinished accommodationnear.com which is already 1st on Yahoo for phrases such as “accommodation near london” I’ll touch on English spelling half the world uses and often forgotten by north Americans, such as “search engine optimisation” and “link exchange programme
