Perth police officers made arrests at Islamic schools after long investigations.

Western Australian Education and Training Minister Mark McGowan said the Australian Islamic College campuses affected by police arrests today would continue to meet all of their educational standards. “Appropriate action is being taken to ensure that students’ education at the campuses in Kewdale and Thornlie will not be affected, despite the arrests of two principals and the director-founder of the college,” Mr McGowan said. “The principal of the third Islamic school in Dianella is not involved. “After an 18-month investigation by Western Australian police, these people were arrested for allegedly overstating student numbers and claiming extra public funds. “The arrests are concerning because every year the Western Australian and Federal Governments give generous funding to each non-Government school based on their declarations about the number of students attending. “Both Governments have processes in place to regularly check the claims made by schools and these arrests are a perfect example of how thorough they are. “The Department of Education Services is working closely with the college campuses to ensure the needs of students are not affected by the arrests. “The campuses have been inspected in the past and have met the requirements for registration as non-Government schools. “The Islamic schools will not be closed as a result of the arrests.”
