A couple of years ago, my spouse noticed an uncomfortable lump in her left breast. We consulted with our local Doctor which resulted in an agonising experience with a mammogram. Research indicates that populations with access to mammograms have no better breast cancer mortality rates than populations with no mammograms. In other words, although we all know people who have had benefit from a mammogram, when you look at the broader population there is apparently no difference.

Does this mean that the brutal process of mammography is for some women cancelling the benefit of early diagnosis? This is my suspicion.
